Covenant House New Orleans
Established in 1988, Covenant House New Orleans provides a comprehensive array of services and programs for homeless, runaway and at-risk youth ages 16-21. Programs include:
Crisis Care
Covenant House New Orleans continues to be the largest provider of services to homeless and at-risk youth in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Bound by our mission of unconditional love, Covenant House is the only open intake facility in the city that accepts youth without pre-admission screening. Our Crisis Shelter offers emergency shelter services to as many as 65 youth and their children, at any given time, between the ages of 16 and 21. We offer overnight services to homeless youth who are unable or unwilling to commit to more than one night's stay at Covenant House New Orleans. These services include safe and secure shelter and access to showers, clothing, and meals for a 24-hour period. However, we encourage all youth to enter our primary Crisis Center program that allows a resident to reside in the Crisis Center while they complete certain classes and work towards full employment. Crisis Center residents may elect to apply to our Rights of passage (ROP) program or may work with their case manager to transition to more stable and permanent housing.
Community Service Center
The Covenant House New Orleans Christopher Ciaccio Community Service Center provides services and programs for residents and the surrounding community. The Ciaccio Center works on two levels:
- It serves as the base for all Covenant House New Orleans activities and programs designed to help kids and parents deal with the issues that lead to family disintegration and homelessness.
- For youth who come to us from the streets, Covenant House New Orleans staff provide educational, vocational, job training and long-term counseling programs.
Rights of Passage
The Rights of Passage Program is designed to allow young people to live a step beyond the dorm rooms and support of the main CH NO buildings, giving them greater independence, but still have a safety net. The goals of the program is that the clients enhance their life skills, raise their educational level and save money. They pay 20% of their income as rent, save 20% and have 40% for their own use in order to teach fiscal responsibility. The program is limited to 18 months.
Permanent Supportive Housing
Permanent Supportive Housing allows young people with disabilities to have a safe and secure place to live, so that they can focus on the other challenges they face with the assistance of case management. The Permanent Supportive Housing Program is designed to help single young people as well as young people with children. The disorders range from Schizophrenia to Developmental Disabilities.
Education/Vocational Program
The Education/Vocational Department of Covenant House New Orleans prepares young people for employment opportunities through GED preparation/acquisition and/or continuing education ... with the final step being employment. We assist youth by providing classes that address pre-employment skills, literacy skills, and life skills. Once our youth successfully navigates the curriculum, they are assisted by staff pursue new job and career opportunities.
