DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

Department:  Data Processing
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Purpose of Position:  The Database Administrator is responsible for the maintenance, performance, integrity and security of Covenant House databases (TEAM Approach, Kintera or other email transaction DB). Additional role requirements will include planning, development and troubleshooting.

The Database Administrator incorporates the following principles and ensures that data remains consistent across the databases; data is clearly defined; users access data concurrently in a form that suites their needs; there is provision for data security and recovery (all data is retrievable in an emergency).

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Establish the needs of users and monitor user access and security monitoring performance and manage parameters to provide fast query responses to 'front end' users.
  • Map out the 'conceptual design' for a planned database in outline.
  • Consider both 'back end' organization of data and 'front end' accessibility for end users.
  • Refine the 'logical design' so that it can be translated into a specific data model.
  • Further refine the 'physical design' to meet system storage requirements.
  • Install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS).
  • Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary ('metadata').
  • Control access permissions and privileges.
  • Develop, manage and test backup and recovery plans.
  • Ensure that storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures are functioning correctly.
  • Work closely with IT project managers, database programmers and finance and development staff.
  • Communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database qaulity control, integrity and security.
  • Commission and install new applications.
  • Serve as a resource and provide support to Headquarters and other CH sites in use of TEAM APPROACH.
  • Occasional travel as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in related field.
  • 8-10 years experience in Database Management or related field.
  • Must be computer literate and proficient in Micrsoft Excel.
  • Experience with donor databases; TEAM APPROACH and Oracle a plus.
  • Knowledge of query database language / SQL.
  • Excellent verbal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Good programming logic, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and interact with senior management and all levels of staff.
  • Must be flexible to the needs of the organization and able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Willingness to keep up to date with developments in new technology.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information and maintain utmost discretion.
