Faith Community volunteers together during a retreat.

Faith Community Volunteers come from all over the United States and Canada, and are united by their commitments to serving the youth of Covenant House.

Covenant House is blessed to have the support of so many caring people who give money, time, talent, and energy to help the kids. Our Faith Community offers a unique chance to serve homeless kids full time at Covenant House, live with other volunteers, and share in daily prayer and reflection.  We encourage you to explore our website and contact us for more information about how you can be part of Faith Community's legacy of service to Covenant House.

Volunteer with Covenant House Faith Community

Faith Community Volunteers can serve for six months or one year, with the option to recommit for an additional year.   During their service commitment, volunteers are assigned to serve 40 hours per week, in 8-10 hour shifts, at one of our Covenant House crisis centers. Most volunteers serve as Resident Advisors, Youth Advisors, or Case Managers on one of our youth residential floors.  Volunteers with specialized experience and/or certifications may serve in our medical services , outreach, or pastoral care programs.  All Faith Community volunteers serve in direct care with the homeless adolescents at our Covenant House Crisis Centers in New York City, Atlantic City, Detroit and Ft Lauderdale.

Service to homeless youth at Covenant House

Volunteers receive special training in a community setting for their service placement. This training period offers new volunteers the chance to bond with and encourage each other. Through living in an intentional community with one another, they find the strength they need to face, with energy and joy, the daily challenges of working with homeless kids.

Community Living

During their training and term of service, our diverse team of Faith Community volunteers live in a house with three to five other volunteers. They share household chores, participate in community activities, and share in community leadership.  Simplicity is fundamental in the Faith Community. Volunteers embrace the challenge of living simple, respectful, and healthy lifestyles together.

Reflection/Prayer in Community

Faith Community volunteers have the opportunity to share in prayer and reflection together for 30 minutes per day, six days per week. Silence and quiet meditation are integrated into this time. People of any faith background or tradition – or none at all – are both welcomed and respected.

Reflections from recent volunteers

Throughout their service commitment, Faith Community volunteers submit reflections on their experiences to the directors of Faith Community.  Here, you can read some of the stories and ideas that our volunteers wanted to share about their year of service with Faith Community.
