Giving "the kids nobody else wanted to deal with," another chance at education

Charter schools, by definition, come in all shapes and sizes. But one group of charter schools in Detroit is particularly unusual — it is run by Covenant House. Covenant House Life Skills Centers teach students who dropped out or were expelled from public school. Over 400 young people have gotten their high school diplomas in the past five years.

"I believed he would kill me."

Growing up in a "picture-perfect" house was just an illusion for Connie — inside it was a house of horrors. When her father wasn't hitting Connie, he verbally abused her. But running away from home didn't heal the emotional scars. Finally, after a suicide attempt, Connie found Covenant House and hope.
