Covenant House Alaska

Helping Homeless Kids in Anchorage

As the state’s largest youth shelter, Covenant House Alaska is a place of refuge for kids all across the state – kids who don’t feel safe at home. Since opening our doors in 1988, we have served thousands of homeless and runaway youth– continually expanding our services and programs to meet the changing needs of the community.

In the past three years, our Crisis Center has experienced a 58% increase in our average daily census. Every year, we see more young people that are dealing with mental illness, substance abuse issues, and lack of affordable housing.

Through our three main programs and associated services, we meet the basic needs of kids in crisis, while also providing them with the support to become healthy, self-sufficient, contributing members of our community. We help them finish school, learn valuable vocational skills, find a job, secure a place to live, reunify with their families if possible, and, build a strong foundation and to begin their lives again.

Two transitional living programs help our youth achieve stability and independence, pursuing their education and working full or part-time jobs while living at Covenant House Alaska. Rights of Passage provides supportive housing for youth ages 18-20 who are seeking independent living. The primary population served is young adults without housing options or the skills to live independently. Passage House provides supportive housing for parenting and pregnant teens. The focus is on vocational and independent living skills, as well as raising healthy children.

We are also advocates for young people who often don’t have a voice to speak for themselves. Through staff efforts and youth services, such as Legal Street, Covenant House Alaska works to educate legislators and the general public about the problems and suffering faced by Alaska’s homeless youth.
