Why are teens homeless?

To understand youth homelessness, one must examine the issues that lead to these unfortunate circumstances. Kids become homeless for a variety of reasons which include running away form home, being abandoned by parents or guardians, emancipation, and aging out of state or foster care. Once homeless, few safety nets are available for young people who are still financially, emotionally and legally dependent on adults. Without resources, an adequate support system, and the skills to live independently, the streets can become one of the only options for homeless youth.

The Issues

To effectively advocate for homeless youth, you must understand the underlying causes of the issue. There are many deep-seated psychological, physical, and economic reasons – as well as flaws in the very systems designed to protect them – that cause kids to become homeless and living on the streets.
