Helping Homeless Kids in Managua

Civil war, dictatorship, and natural disaster have sadly left Nicaragua as one of the poorest countries in the Western hemisphere. There are thousands of street children in Nicaragua. Many face the indifference of their families and society or are the products of abuse and poverty. They wander the streets without food or education, struggling to survive on a day-to-day basis.

In response to thousands of vulnerable children living on the streets in Nicaragua, Covenant House Nicaragua (known locally as Casa Alianza Nicaragua) doesn’t just shelter homeless kids, we teach them the skills they need to survive. We work with an average of 5,000 street children a year. Many of these are the victims of sexual exploitation or were trafficked for sexual purposes. The vast majority have problems with addiction and broken family ties... all are considered to be at high risk.

Human trafficking is a major issue in Nicaragua. We provide life-saving outreach, participate in rescues of victims, and investigate potential trafficking sites. The Legal Aid and Advocacy Program promotes and defends the rights of children, young people, and young mothers.

Our Residential Program, housed in the Conrad N. Hilton Home, contains several different facilities, including a library, community room, study room, chapel, sports area, toy library, green areas, arts room, dormitories, and a computer room. Casa Alianza Nicaragua also has a Mother/Child program in which young mothers are offered services designed to help them learn parenting skills, overcome drug abuse, and acquire the skills they need for a brighter future.
