Runaway teens find community at Covenant House Florida

Helping Homeless Kids in Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando

Every day, Covenant House Florida reaches over 200 kids in the Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando areas through our street outreach programs, crisis shelters, and transitional housing programs. Our Ft. Lauderdale house opened in 1985. We then expanded to Orlando in 1995, making Covenant House Florida one of the state's largest private agencies providing services to runaway and homeless youth.

The current economic situation has increased the number of youth seeking shelter in our state. In 1985, 2/3 of Florida homeless youth were from another state and in 2009, 2/3 are from Broward County, Palm Beach and Miami/Dade counties.

More families are in distress, and too often when that occurs, teenagers become castoffs with unfinished education and few job or life skills. All too many of them have become dependent on drugs or alcohol. This is often a result of witnessing substance abuse by their families and then experimenting with the readily accessible substances in their homes. And adolescent girls, looking for love and acceptance, become pregnant and come to us during their pregnancy or after having a child.

Our commitment to homeless kids calls us to serve suffering children of the street, and to protect and safeguard all children. With the help of our community, Covenant House Florida will continue our work of rescuing troubled kids from the streets.
