Homesless children find shelter in Covenant House Honduras

Helping Homeless Kids in Tegucigalpa

Since its independence, Honduras has been plagued by unrest, internal rebellion, and civil war. Today Honduras faces problems of extreme poverty, chronic unemployment, and a serious crime wave fuelled by gangs known as "maras".

Covenant House Honduras helps over 400 kids under 18 years old annually while also assisting other street children in Tegucigalpa, the nation’s capital. Founded in 1987, Covenant House Honduras works towards building a better future for street children in the region.

Our teams of street educators build non-judgmental, trusting relationship with kids and works to meet their immediate needs. Then, if they decide to leave the streets, kids are invited to enter into one of the Casa Alianza residential programs, where we help rebuild their lives.

Our residential programs not only protect kids who have spent their childhoods on the streets – they also teach homeless kids to be members of society. Cherub Home, which opened in 2003 to address the problem of child prostitution in Honduras, supports up to 80 girls working to overcome not only homelessness, but also the emotional scars of their past

Human trafficking is a major issue in Honduras. Most of our kids come to us hooked on drugs. That's how the traffickers keep them sedated, so we do a lot of work detoxing them, treating their addiction, and getting them back in school. We are strong advocates and have created the Legal Aid and Advocacy programs in Honduras to promote and defend the rights of children, young people, and young mothers.
