Helping Homeless Kids in Canada

Canada's largest youth shelter, Covenant House Toronto, has offered help and hope to more than 50,000 young people since opening in 1982. Covenant House Toronto provides a range of programs to help homeless and runaway youth build independent lives.

We are more than just a place to stay. Covenant House Toronto provides crisis care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has a wide range of services under one roof – including , counseling, health care services, and employment assistance. Covenant House Toronto has helped thousands of young people move from a life on the streets to a life with a future.

Our 94-bed shelter crisis shelter allows us take care of the immediate needs of homeless and runaway youth with nutritious meals, medical attention, clean clothes, safety from the streets, and structure to help rebuild lives.

The Covenant House Rights of Passage program is open for up to 28 young people. Youth have a room of their own for up to 15 months while they either work full-time or continue their education and work part-time.

Last year 1,061 youth used our health care clinic for a total of 7,748 visits. We saw about 100 more youth in the clinic last year. On an annual basis, about 40 percent of the youth are new to our health care service.

Over 14,328 students participated in our in-school presentations about the dangers of the street and safer alternatives to running to the street. As well, our Social Justice Retreats brought 1,733 high school students to Covenant House to learn more about the challenges of their homeless peers through discussion, activities and a walk about in the downtown area.
