Helping Homeless Kids in Vancouver
Covenant House Vancouver was established in September 1997 in response to a study reporting that British Columbia had more than 10,000 runaways annually, a number that continues to rise every year.
Since opening our doors, Covenant House Vancouver has worked tirelessly for young people who have fled physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse, as well as those who have been forced from their homes. We give them hot food, a warm bed, and the support they need in their choice to change their present circumstances and heal from past traumas.
In response to the enormity and severity of the issues facing our youth, Covenant House has developed three core services: Community Support Services which provides both street outreach and a daily, non-residential, drop-in program; a 24-hour crisis shelter; and transitional living program offering housing for up to 24 months.
The new Covenant House L.I.F.E. Program offers a comprehensive, module-based approach to teaching essential life-skills. Programs include wellness (e.g. stress/anger management, drug and alcohol relapse prevention, nutrition), personal and social development, money management, employment skills, daily living skills, and housing, transportation & community resources.
These core services are supported by several in-house programs (drug and alcohol and mental health counseling, life-skills training etc.) designed to provide each young person with a "one-stop shop" approach to leaving the streets and achieving independence.
