CH Alaska Joins Community Partners in Push for Housing, Education, and Employment Opportunities
Covenant House Alaska has joined with community partners in Anchorage to apply for The Communities Thrive Challenge, a $10-million funding opportunity funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Rockefeller Foundation.
The Communities Thrive Challenge is open to organizations that are working to expand economic opportunity for people and communities experiencing financial insecurity and housing instability in the United States.
Covenant House Alaska has joined with the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, Bean’s Café, Catholic Social Services, Cook Inlet Housing Authority, Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Nine Star Education and Employment, Partners Reentry Center, and United Way of Anchorage, Volunteers of America to apply for the funding, which would be used to connect those in need in Anchorage with housing, education, and employment support.
Out of 1,800 applications, the Covenant House and partners initiative, called The Streets 2 Success Project, has made it to the second round of the process, along with only 85 other applicants. The Streets 2 Success goal is to serve more people, more rapidly, and to achieve long-lasting results that can be evaluated and replicated.
In 2017, data shows that 5,893 people experienced some level of homelessness in Anchorage. Funds from this Challenge would move us closer to the goal of making homelessness a rare, brief, and one-time occurrence.
As part of the application process, our Youth Task Force wrote, directed, and performed an inspiring video. One of the stars is Go Go, who sang with Broadway star and Covenant House Board Member Capathia Jenkins at the Covenant House A Night of Broadway Stars in Anchorage 5 years ago. He has remained committed and connected to Covenant House, and is about to graduate from Nursing School. Go Go credits Covenant House, Capathia, and the Broadway community for helping him to find his voice and the courage to share his message with others.
