Real Estate Executives Reach Out to our Kids
On Thursday, October 12th, leaders in the real estate industry will sleep on the streets of New York, Florida and New Jersey in solidarity with homeless young people.
The funds raised will provide the homeless youth at Covenant House with food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and counseling, along with long-term residential, employment and educational support to help formerly homeless youth build new lives.
“Our friends in the real estate community are going to transform the pavement outside our shelters into a place of hope for the hundreds of kids who sleep safely inside each night,” said Covenant House President Kevin Ryan. “When our kids look out their windows on October 12th and see all these amazing people sleeping on the street, that will be a powerful moment in their lives. A moment when our kids start to think that maybe they are worthy, that maybe because people care, there is hope. This kind of personal, hands-on support is a life raft for our kids.”
“One of the great things about the Real Estate Sleep Out is the family we’ve created,” said Matt Schmeelk, Senior Executive Vice President, Kensington Vanguard National Land Services. “These Sleep Outs are a great way for people in our industry to come together and learn about the challenges homeless kids face and to be part of the solution, as well as to provide support to young people who have not had the gifts of home and family in their lives.”
At last year’s Covenant House Real Estate Sleep Out, one of the most powerful moments was when a 20-year-old Covenant House resident bravely shared her story with the Sleep Out participants.
“My mom used drugs, and my dad was never around,” she said. “Then when I was 12 my mom died of kidney failure. My grandma adopted me but she was an alcoholic. When she was drunk she would beat me with anything she could get her hands on …
“One day one of my friends told me about Covenant House, and I was fortunate they had room for me. It was such a relief to know where I was going to sleep and where my next meal was coming from, I never had that feeling before. I feel like I can focus on my goals of continuing my education and looking for work.
“I really appreciate all of you being here tonight. And on behalf of all the kids here at Covenant House thank you for helping us. It means a lot to all of us.”
