Recently we’ve seen another major city acknowledge the seriousness of the youth homelessness crisis, and make a plan to take actionable steps to address it. Under a new plan announced by Mayor Eric Adams, New York City is building a system to address youth homelessness and break the cycle of poverty to prevent adult homelessness. This plan is to provide safe beds for youth in need of crisis shelter, rental assistance to help transition them to stable housing, job training and placement assistance, and counseling to maintain their financial stability and household life. Ending youth homelessness is going to take a comprehensive, youth-informed approach to crisis shelter, medical care, counseling, and transitional housing. Even after young people leave our houses, we ensure that they have the opportunity to join our alumni community, where they can continue to seek community and give support to other young people who are going through the same struggles they were.
