Mykel’s Story: From Rejection to Safety

Mykel, through Covenant House New Orleans, was able to find sanctuary after being thrown out of her home for coming out.

Mykel's story starts like too many others: being rejected and displaced after coming out.

As a young teen, Mykel kept her identity a secret. When she finally shared her truth with her mom - the one person she hoped would love her no matter what - she was kicked out of her home. This experience is far too common, a reality reflected in the fact that 40% of youth facing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+.

At Covenant House, young people like Mykel find something that should never be rare: a place to be safe, supported, and treated like they belong.

"When I first came in, I remember this person asked me, 'What are your pronouns?'" Mykel shares. "At Covenant House, there are actually staff that just do everything in their power to make sure you feel safe and comfortable."
