Choosing Safety, Choosing a Future

Leora at Covenant House NYC rally

At 24, Leora had nowhere safe to call home. After losing housing with her mother, she stayed with a partner who abused her, until one violent night left her afraid for her life.

The next morning, she made a promise to herself: “I can’t go back. I want to change my life today.”

That evening, she walked through the doors of Covenant House New York. She found a clean bed, a warm meal, and a kind of safety she hadn’t felt in years. In eight months, she built routines, joined job training, and moved into an apartment of her own.

Today, Leora is a proud member of the Covenant House International Alumni Community and a youth ambassador. She speaks to donors, policymakers, and young people who are still searching for their own way out.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Leora reminds us that love is not supposed to hurt. Sometimes love looks like safety, support, and finally believing you deserve a future.
