One Night. One Community. A Shared Commitment to Youth.

Youth gather to participate in Covenant House New York's first Sleep Out event of 2026 in March.

On Friday, March 13, at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, hundreds gathered for Covenant House’s first 2026 Sleep Out. It was an evening that asked something simple, yet profound: What does it mean to truly show up for young people?

By the end of the night, that question had been answered not just in words, but in action.

From the moment participants walked in, there was a shared understanding that this wasn’t just an event. It was an invitation to step outside of comfort and into community. To be, even briefly, in solidarity with young people who face homelessness not by choice, but by circumstance.

A Community Rooted in Values

At Covenant House, community is something young people can feel the moment they walk through the door.

As Covenant House New York CEO Dr. Shakeema North-Albert shared,

“When a young person walks through our doors, they are entering a community rooted in values.”

Those values — inclusivity, joy, ambition, accountability, and courage — guided every moment of the night as something lived in real time.

Centering Youth, Always

Leora, an alum from Covenant House New York, speaks about her experience coming out the other end of homelessness.

The heart of the evening belonged to young people.

Through the voices of Youth Ambassadors and Alumni, the room was grounded in lived experience that was honest, unfiltered, and deeply human.

Leora, a Covenant House alum, reminded everyone what transformation truly looks like. After surviving instability and an abusive relationship, she found safety and structure. She also reclaimed something even more powerful: her voice, and with it, a new understanding of joy.

“Joy is what happens when you come through something that was meant to break you, and you still find yourself smiling.”

It was a line that settled over the room and stayed there.

Because while this work provides shelter, it is also about creating the conditions for young people to heal, grow, and imagine a future again.

Values in Motion

Throughout the night, Covenant House’s values came alive in ways both big and small.

Inclusivity looked like new faces entering the movement as first-time participants chose to learn, listen, and engage.

Joy surfaced in unexpected moments like laughter between strangers, in shared stories, in the energy of people connected by a shared purpose.

Ambition showed up in the collective impact of the funds raised and communities rallied.

Accountability lived in those who were celebrated for returning to Sleep Out year after year, choosing to stay committed long after a single night ends.

And courage was everywhere, including in the vulnerability of the stories shared, in the willingness to listen deeply, and in the decision to act.

As one speaker reminded the room,

“Ending youth homelessness isn’t the work of one person. It isn’t even the work of one organization. It takes a village… thousands of people choosing to show up together.”

And that is exactly what filled the Javits Center that night.

From Awareness to Responsibility

Before stepping outside for the night, participants were asked to sit with a final question:

What responsibility comes with knowing what you know now?

It lingered.

Because Sleep Out is not designed to end in the morning. It is meant to follow you into your conversations, your decisions, and your willingness to act.

Outside, as sleeping bags lined the pavement and the city moved around them, the contrast became clear.

Participants had a choice that young people experiencing homelessness often do not.

And in that realization, something shifted.

Awareness deepened into empathy, and that empathy moved toward responsibility.

And responsibility carried forward has the power to become change.

More Than One Night

By morning, what remained was a stronger, wider, more connected community that sends a clear and unwavering message.

Young people are not alone, and they are not forgotten.

They are worthy of their basic needs, and of their wildest dreams.
