Designed as the nerve center of Covenant House International's federation-wide efforts, the CHI Innovation Center will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, advocates, donors, and young people with lived experience to advance urgently needed solutions to one of society's most pressing challenges.

At a time when youth homelessness continues to grow, the CHI Innovation Center signals a commitment to not only respond to the crisis, but to fundamentally change its trajectory.

Why Innovation Matters Now

The need for action has never been more urgent. More than 4.2 million youth currently face homelessness in the U.S alone, and without new investments or interventions, that number could triple to 14.7 million by 2035.

For decades, Covenant House has provided lifesaving shelter, care, and support to young people experiencing homelessness, trafficking, and exploitation. But ending youth homelessness requires more than direct services alone. It demands new ideas, stronger partnerships, expanded research, effective public policy, and scalable solutions that address root causes before young people fall into crisis.

Bringing The Journey Home to Life

The CHI Innovation Center is a cornerstone of The Journey Home, Covenant House International's strategic road map to address youth homelessness through prevention, intervention, and restoration.

Rather than focusing solely on helping young people once they have become homeless, The Journey Home takes a comprehensive approach that seeks to prevent homelessness before it begins, intervene effectively during times of crisis, and support long-term independence.

Within the walls of the CHI Innovation Center, ideas and connections become concrete programs, policies, and partnerships that accelerate progress across the entire Covenant House federation. It is a place where best practices are shared, new approaches are tested, and successful models are scaled to reach more young people than ever before.

The CHI Innovation Center was intentionally designed to support collaboration, creativity, and continuous learning. Its open neighborhoods and flexible work environments reflect Covenant House's core values of accountability, ambition, courage, inclusivity, and joy.

Large meeting areas, intimate huddle rooms, and adaptable workspaces encourage spontaneous connections and cross-functional problem solving. Whether staff members are conducting research, developing advocacy strategies, hosting training sessions, or cultivating partnerships, the environment has been built to foster innovation at every level.

The center also supports Covenant House's hybrid workforce model, creating a flexible and engaging workplace where employees can focus, collaborate, and thrive.

Advancing Solutions Across the Americas

One of the CHI Innovation Center's most ambitious goals is to strengthen Covenant House's impact throughout the Americas. Through a dedicated training academy, program and development leaders from Covenant House sites across North and Central America will gain opportunities for professional development, leadership training, and knowledge sharing.

The center will also drive federation-wide learning by convening diverse voices and perspectives. Researchers, frontline staff, community partners, youth advocates, and policymakers will work together to challenge systemic barriers and co-create effective solutions.

By serving as a catalyst for collaboration, the center will help ensure that proven approaches can be replicated, adapted, and scaled across Covenant House sites, and ultimately across the social services sector.

Every aspect of the CHI Innovation Center's design reflects Covenant House's mission and values. Natural wood elements bring warmth and connection, while industrial materials honor the architectural character of the surrounding neighborhood in NYC. Greenery throughout the space evokes an outdoor plaza, creating an atmosphere of welcome, renewal, and possibility.

The design includes striking mission-focused artwork and environmental graphics that reinforce Covenant House's core principles of absolute respect and unconditional love. These visual elements serve as daily reminders of the organization's commitment to treating every young person with dignity and compassion.

Notable spaces include the Coleman Family Boardroom, equipped with cutting-edge technology donated by Cisco, and the Celebration Center, a flexible event venue designed for trainings, convenings, receptions, and special events. The Brian Bob Love + Light Bridge physically and symbolically connects Covenant House International with Covenant House New York, honoring a beloved staff member whose work helped bridge young people and the broader community.

Guided by Youth Voices

Perhaps most importantly, the CHI Innovation Center was shaped by the voices of those who know Covenant House's mission best — alumni and youth ambassadors. Through collaborative design sessions, current and former residents helped establish the center's guiding theme, The Journey Home, and contributed ideas for room names inspired by pathways of prevention, intervention, restoration, hope, courage, love, and service.

Spaces such as the North Star Room, Compass Room, Anchor Room, and Renewal Room reflect the journey that Covenant House helps young people navigate, from crisis to stability, and ultimately to independence.
